Senate Week in Review Sept. 14-18

Springfield, Ill. – The focus is on gerrymandering and pensions this week said State Senator Dan Duffy (R- Lake Barrington), who explained that the third public hearing of the Senate Redistricting Committee has been scheduled for Sept. 22.

Also this week, a Senate task force on pensions met to discuss the state’s massive pension debt, and offer tentative solutions to reducing Illinois’ pension obligations. Senator Duffy said that Illinois has consistently held the dubious distinction of claiming the worst pension funding problem in the nation.

Gerrymandering reform will again be the topic at the third public hearing of the Illinois Senate Committee on Redistricting, which will be on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in Peoria. The hearing will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be held in Bradley University's Hartmann Theatre Center, located at 1453 St. James Street.

Among those scheduled to testify at the hearing will be Brad McMillan of Bradley University's Institute for Principled Leadership in Public Service. McMillan is a member of the Illinois Reform Commission, which has proposed a major reform of Illinois' redistricting laws to reduce  political gerrymandering – the drawing of legislative and congressional districts to provide an automatic advantage either to a political party or to incumbent officeholders.

Springfield, Ill. – More than 200 bills were signed into law this week, including measures that State Senator Dan Duffy (R-Lake Barrington) says are intended to increase transparency and accountability in state government and Illinois’ schools, keep sex offenders off social networking sites, and change how legislative and judicial pensions are calculated.

On August 11, comprehensive legislation was signed to increase transparency and promote accountability through the creation of a public Web site known as the “Illinois Transparency and Accountability Portal.”

House Bill 35 (PA 96-0225) will allow Illinois residents to access a variety of information including state expenditures, tax credits, state employee salaries and state contracts. Similar legislation was enacted at the federal level and in other states, and has received widespread support from grassroots organizations, trade associations, press associations and taxpayer protection groups.
